5 Tips for a healthier lifestyle

Keen to make some healthy lifestyle changes in 2019? Instead of drawing up a long to-do list, why not commit to simple changes that you can work towards each day – and that will have a positive impact on your body and mind. Here are a few suggestions to get you started.

1. Move more

You don’t have to have a gym membership to be active. For example, you can take the stairs instead of the lift, park a bit further away from the mall, take a dance class with a friend, spend some time gardening or take the dog for a walk. Be creative and find small ways to move more during the day – your body will thank you for it.

2. Go for the good stuff

Keen to eat more healthily? Instead of focusing on the unhealthy foods you’re trying to cut out, think about all the fresh and delicious produce you’d like to introduce into your diet. Visit a local farmers’ market and pick up a variety of colourful fruit and veg, and try out some new recipes and cuisines, from spicy Mexican wraps to fresh Thai salads.

3. Have more water

Ditch soft drinks and juices and have more water instead. Remember that even fruit juices have a high sugar content and can contain artificial flavourings. If plain water isn’t your thing, add some fruit slices for fresh flavour or order sparkling water when you go out.

4. Lend a hand

If you’d like to give back, look for volunteer opportunities near you. Lending a helping hand not only benefits others, it’s also likely to have a positive impact on you. Volunteering can help give you a sense of purpose and it’s also a great way to enjoy new social interactions, as you’re likely to meet plenty of people who share the desire to give back to their community.

5. Explore more

Enrich your life by having new experiences and exploring more, whether that’s checking out a new bookstore downtown, visiting a museum, booking that zipline adventure you’ve always wanted to try, or heading to the Wild Coast for a holiday. Try to have a bit of fun each day – it’s good for the soul.

Remember, living a healthy lifestyle doesn’t have to be out of reach. Start introducing small, positive changes into your life and you’ll soon find that you’re living more healthily, naturally.
